What the time calculator does
The time calculator adds or subtracts two durations written as hours, minutes and seconds. Type the first time and the second time in HH:MM:SS format, choose Add or Subtract, and press Calculate. The result is shown in the same format, together with the total in seconds, minutes and hours as decimals. It is built for elapsed time, such as the length of a shift, a race split or a video edit, not for clock times in different time zones.
How it works
- Each time is converted to seconds: hours × 3600 + minutes × 60 + seconds.
- The two totals are added or subtracted.
- The result is converted back: hours = total ÷ 3600, minutes = the remainder ÷ 60, seconds = what is left.
Working in seconds avoids the carry errors that make manual time arithmetic awkward, where 45 minutes plus 30 minutes is 1 hour 15 minutes rather than 75 minutes.

The last row shows that the calculator does not wrap at 24 hours; it treats the values as durations, so 25:30:00 is a correct answer for a total elapsed time. A negative result, as in the fourth row, is shown with a minus sign rather than being wrapped around.
Entering times correctly
- Use three parts separated by colons: 01:05:00 for one hour five minutes. Two-part entries such as 1:05 are not accepted.
- Leading zeros are optional, so 1:5:0 works, but the three-part form must be kept.
- Minutes and seconds above 59 are accepted and normalised: 00:90:00 is treated as 1 hour 30 minutes.
- For a duration in minutes only, put it in the middle slot: 00:135:00 for 135 minutes.
Converting the result
The decimal hours figure is what payroll and billing systems want. 7 hours 15 minutes is 7.25 hours; at $28 per hour that is $203. To go from decimal hours back to minutes, multiply the fraction by 60: 0.2625 h × 60 = 15.75 min, which is 15 minutes 45 seconds. Typical uses
- Timesheets. Add the sessions of a split shift, then subtract the unpaid break.
- Sport. Add lap or leg times to get a total; subtract to get a split between two checkpoints.
- Media production. Add clip durations to check a programme fits a slot; subtract to find how much must be cut.
- Cooking and lab work. Chain step durations to find total process time.
- Travel. Add legs and layovers for total journey time, independent of time zones.
Common mistakes
- Entering clock times and expecting a duration. 17:30:00 minus 09:15:00 does give 8 hours 15 minutes, but only if both times fall on the same day. For overnight shifts add 24:00:00 to the finish time first.
- Treating decimal minutes as seconds. 7.25 hours is 7 h 15 min, not 7 h 25 min.
- Missing a colon. 0245:30 is rejected; use 02:45:30.

Can I add more than two times?
Add the first two, then use the result as Time 1 and add the next. The decimal totals make it easy to keep a running sum.
Why does the result show more than 24 hours?
Because the calculator works with durations, not times of day. 25:30:00 is 25.5 hours of elapsed time.
How do I enter half a second?
The tool accepts whole seconds only. For fractions of a second, convert everything to seconds and use a standard calculator.
What does a negative result mean?
Time 2 was larger than Time 1 in a subtraction. The magnitude is still correct; swap the values if you want a positive answer.
Does it handle days?
Not directly. Enter days as hours: 2 days is 48:00:00.
